Magic Poetry and Music for a Spooky Season
Dear Michael,

Be Afraid, be Very Afraid this Halloween season, or at least come out for some spooky music and poetry.  We have an Ohio Poetry Association Gala on the 9th, and Halfway Home on the 10th of October.  Pat is scary, but Mike always brings a cake, so it works out.  Then the Hard Tackers play on the 17th; they'll scare your socks off but in a nice way.  Second Wind, a two-woman bluegrass group will play with them.  Craig McVay will read poetry and prose on the 23rd.  Bill Cohen will break in the new piano on the 24th, Liz James will tell us about President Harding on the 29th.  (President Harding is dead, but he seems to have an undead spirit.)  Jennifer Bosveld will offer a publishing workshop on the morning of the 31st, and the Columbus Folk Music Society has promised to entertain us with a few zombies on the 31st.  There will be a prize for the best costume that night!  So please come to the bookstore and tell us some scary stories.

Ohio Poetry Association Gala--Oct 9
HistoryOfHands Bring your best work and share it with friends.  We are going to build a chapbook out of tonight's reading, so if you have been holding back about sharing your work, tonight would be a good night.  We are also going to auction off some signed poetry books, including a signed David Citino, so if you are a reader, a collector, or just an appreciator of fine poetry, please come out and enjoy and evening of magical poetry with us. Fun starts at 6:30 pm.  Free parking in the rear.

Learn more about this great band
Halfway Home--Oct 10
Halfway Home Okay, so you know Pat is scary, but Renilda will be keep him in line, so how bad can it be?  Mike is spooky, but he brings cake and Patti is magical, so it all works out.We suspect Brian might be trying to blow a fuse with all his electronic equipment, then we would have to listen in the dark!.  What better rockin' way to roll in Halloween than to enjoy this great band on a chilly Saturday evening?  These folks are the best and they only play the best.  Halfway Home can work magic on tired spirits, so please come and enjoy their spooky talent.

Fun starts at 7:pm.  Music is free, but we will pass the hat.

Hard Tackers and Second Wind--Oct 17
Altering Course I think John Locke is probably the scariest of this lot.  I know in addition to sea-shanties, he tells some pretty scary stories, but Fred Bailey and Chris Bolles are pretty scary, too.  So for sea shanties that will shiver your timbers and singers who will scare your socks off, come out and hear these guys.

The ladies of Second Wind will follow with some of the Carter Family's best tunes, so it should be a fun evening.

Music starts at 7pm  The music is free, but we will pass the hat.

Free parking in the rear.

Bill Cohen on the Piano--Oct 24
Bill Cohen Bill Cohen  does a great job of helping us remember the 60s through the great folk songs of the period.  He usually entertains Columbus with his guitar, but tonight he is serenading us with his piano.  So, if you find nostalgia spooky, come on out.  After all, we baby boomers aren't dead yet.  We might seem to some like the living dead, but we will be celebrating tonight, with one of the best in town.

Music starts at 7pm.  Music is free, but we will pass the hat.  Profits will go to help Randi, Bill's wife, in her work as a volunteer medical translator in the Dominican Republic.

Free Parking in Rear.

Sat. Sept 26th, 7pm

This is the first coffee house of the season!  Jerry Rockwell will be here to perform on the mountain dulcimer, an instrument he is so thoroughly familiar with that he constructs them.  His touring credits are too numerous to mention except to say that he has toured as far as Iceland. Jane Leidheiser, also of the Magpie Consortwill accompany him in the second half of the performance with bowed dulcimer and vocals.  Sounds like a performance not to miss!   The evening opens with a jam session at 7:00, an open stage at 8:00, and the featured performance at 9:00.  Scrumptious baked goods are often carried in--warm from the oven--baked by members.  The suggested donation for admission is $5.00.  Please bring canned goods for the Central Ohio Food Bank.  You are welcome to  park for free on the street or in the Mennonite church lot or behind the bookstore.

Tonight's reader will be Nkechi Edeh.  Please join in for some unique poetry and an opportunity to read your own work to follow.  There is no admission, parking behind the bookstore is free, and we will serve light refreshments.

Since it was drizzling rain last night, I got to be the sole audience for the Thursday night Jam Session.  What an amazing exclusive concert I enjoyed!  This coming Thursday, I will set out a chair for you, whether you would like to play or listen.  The group plays from 7:00 to 10:00, and we will serve light refreshments.

October has five Saturdays this year, and the four Saturdays the bookstore schedules before the CFMS Folkside Coffee House will all be blockbusters!  It's an all-star lineup coming up.  On October 3, At Wit's End will be appearing, and on October 10 Halfway Home will play.  We think these two groups contain some of Columbus's most exciting folk musicians!  October 17 features the Hardtackers, the CFMS a capella men's group singing sea shanties: they sure are fun!  The second act that evening is called Second Wind, two ladies, eleven instruments, and hard-driving bluegrass music.  On October 24, Bill Cohen will be performing on the CFMS's new piano.  So just save us every Saturday, plan to bring some friends, and come have fun with us!

Dear Michael,

Summer has not been too hot this year in Columbus, but still it's nice to come and cool off while listening to good music and good poetry.  This August, Dave Hawkins, the team of Mary, Mike, Larry and Ken, and Terry C. Keller and friends will entertain us musically on Saturday nights, while Norah Holt will present some of her moving poetry on the fourth Friday.  Also, Townz wants everyone to know that the most exciting thing in his day was the arrival of the new piano.  He is hoping that someone will drop by to play it, so he can learn what it's for.  The word is the Bill Cohen will come by and do that soon!  Before Bill arrives, Townz will also get to learn what piano tuners do.
Dave Hawkins Aug 15, 7 pm
Our old friend from Cincinnati will be in town this coming weekend, and he has agreed to stop in and play for us.  Listening to Dave Hawkins play the guitar and sing is like eating watermelon in summer, easy and familiar, but always sweet and refreshingDave Hawkins2. Plus he's seedless.
So please stop by, bring a friend and enjoy the evening with us!
Norah Holt Aug 28, 7:30 pm
Norah is the writing guru in charge of Writer's Ink.  She is normally guiding others to writing excellence, so this will be a wonderful opportunity to hear Norah's own work for a change.  Wendy Rose She will express her piquant views on life and art.  Open Mic to follow;  free parking and light refreshments.  The poetry is free, but we will pass the hat.
Mary, Mike, Larry and Ken            Aug 22, 7 pm
Marry, Mike, Larry and Ken You asked for it!!!  Mary Miller, Mike Hale and Larry Ramey are at it again with "A Night with Mary, Mike and Larry." Only this time, they've dragged in (kicking and screaming) Ken Pardee to assist in the mayhem!  There will be original music.  There will be old favorites. And Ohhh... there will be sweet harmony.  Come sing and laugh with us and enjoy this rare reunion of talent!

Terry C. Keller Aug 29, 7 pm
ElvisTerry specializes in American standards, sprinkled with many of his own compositions.  I especially like his love songs, and sometimes he surprises us with an Elvis tune.  So please come support this exciting local talent.  The music is free, but we will pass the hat.  Free parking in the rear.

Townz's Corner

I hope all of you realize that the bookstore serves free hot dogs on Saturday mornings between 10:30 and 12:00 while the Farmer's Market meets across the street.  Doug says that after Rebecca cooked the first two or three thousand, she got it down pretty well.  What I appreciate most about Saturday morning is the rule, "If it hits the ground, it belongs to Townz."  I really hope you will stop by and talk to Rebecca, because if she starts gesticulating with the tongs in her hand, she is especially likely to drop a hot dog for me!

The good news is that "HalfWay Home" will perform for us twice this month, on the 13th and the 20th.  on the 13th, they will offer their normal eclectic fare.  On the 20th, they are performing a John Prine and Kris Kristofferson evening, so that should be lots of fun.  Staying with the music for a moment, "At Wit's End" will perform for us on the 27th. Fred, Charlotte and Pam have been rehearsing some new numbers and some old favorites.  On the poetry side of things, the "Poets and Writers Guild" will bring us Dr. Michael Bauza on June 26th, and on the 28th, "Perapetic Poets" will be hosting Terry Hermsen and and Mike Lohre.  Clearly, June will be a great month at the bookstore, so please come out to visit us.
Halfway Home
Halfway Home June 13th and the 20th
Halfway Home focuses on American Roots songwriting in an fashion that is always entertaining and exciting.  Pat plays a mean accordion with a very sharp wit.  He is balanced by Renilda's bass and her grace.  Mike has a wonderful voice, and Brian has an amazing guitar.  And it is always a pleasure to hear Patty.
On the 13th, the gang will entertain us with a wide range of American folk songs.  On the 20th, they will focus on the work of John Prine and Kris Kristofferson.  Both events should be a great joy.  The event is free, but we will pass the hat.  Free parking in the rear of the store.  Light refreshments will be served.

Folk Music with an Attitude
June 27th

The other night,  a friend responded to Fred's rendition of "Broken Hand," by saying, "You know, on a scale of 1 to 100, that's a hundred."  At Wit's End offers a truly top-notch rendition of American folk music.  If you enjoy folk music, this is the group to hear.
Music starts at 7pm.  The event is free, but we will pass the hat.  There is free parking in the rear, and light refreshments will be served.

WGBoundForGlory At Wit's End is Back! March 14th
One of the things we think you'll notice when you come to hear At Wit's End is a great deal of musicianship.  Not only has Fred Bailey, the group's leader, been practicing and teaching himself guitar for more years than he would thank us for mentioning, but the other members of the group also have musical backgrounds.  For Charlotte Custis, musical training began with the school girl's choir, which often performed at Mass.  Charlotte has two sisters, with whom she spent a lot of time harmonizing.  Since then, she's always made music part of her life.  Pam Raver, the third member of the trio, studied opera and took singing lessons.  Since 2002, they have been practicing together on a weekly basis.  So come hear this marvelous folk group perform on March 14th.  Music starts at 7 p.m. and is free, but we will pass the hat to support the trio.
BobDylan Folk Music: Terry C. Keller, Mike Hale and Larry Raime, March 21st
Terry C. Keller plays American Standards as well as his own compositions.  His music is always a treat.  Mike Hale and Larry Raime are an energetic duo, who always entertain with original material and old favorites.  The music starts at 7 p.m.  The event is free, but we will pass the hat to support the musicians.  Light refreshments will be served
PeterScott Peripatetic Poets, Jimmi B. Hendricks and Susan Halpern, March 22nd
Jimmi B. Hendricks is a popular poet of popular culture on the Columbus scene.  Susan Halpern has been a favorite for many of us for years and we are glad to have an opportunity to hear her moving work in a unified way. Poetry starts and 7 p.m.  The event is free but we will pass the hat. Light refreshments will be served
WendyRoseThe Poets and Writers Guild: Betsy Kennedy, March 28th -
Betsy will present on the theme Gardens".

Betsy Kennedy has been an active poet for many years and is a contributing member of many poetry organizations in Columbus, so we are glad for an opportunity to hear so much of her work.  Betsy's reading will start at 7:30 p.m. The reading is free, but we will pass the hat.  Light refreshments will be served.
